Junior (Ben Karlinsey), U23 (Emmanuel Bouchard), Senior (Doug Ritchie) race on Friday (1000m) and Saturday (200m). These trials are for Junior and U23 World Championship, Senior World Championships, and Pan Am Games.

Paracanoeists (Hannah Pennington, Alana Nichols,, Spike Kane) try for the Paracanoe World Cup on Saturday morning (200m).

Kenmore~Cascade Athletes to Compete at Team Trials

Six athletes from the Kenmore~Cascade Canoe & Kayak Team will be competing in the US Team Trials in Oklahoma City on April 24–25.  Leading the team is head coach Dan Henderson; representing Kenmore~Cascade will be Ben Karlinsey in the junior trials, paracanoests Hannah Pennington, Spike Kane, and Alana Nichols, and senior athletes Doug Ritchie and Emmanuel Bouchard.

Kenmore~Cascade Canoe & Kayak Athletes Shine at Kenmore Race

The Northwest canoe/kayak race circuit converged in Kenmore Saturday, October 25, to compete in the Kenmore~Cascade Canoe & Kayak Distance Race.  Staged at the new Squire’s Landing Park, Kenmore~Cascade kayaker Ben Karlinsey won the 10 Kilometer Under 18 Years Old Single Kayak event in a time of   52:51.95 and placed second overall.  In the Under 16 Years Old 10 Kilometer Single Kayak event, Kenmore~Cascade’s Thomas Hughes placed second in a time of 1:11:46.  Also from Kenmore~Cascade, Nora Davis placed 3rd in Under 16 Single Kayak at 10 km in a time of 1:17:05.  In the Under 12 age group 5 km events, Kenmore~Cascade’s Renee Ruan placed 1st in girls in a time of 47:33.00, while Ashby Bodine placed second at 40:25.51 in boys.  In the Paracanoe events, Alana Nichols finished second in a time of 46:25.29.  In Kayak Women Over 30 Years Old, Chris Gutierrez Flynn placed first in a time of 34:44.94, followed by Diana Hughes in a time of 39:19.35.

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Greg Barton of Seattle also raced in the event and placed first overall in the 10 kilometer race. When receiving his award, he complimented the City and the Kenmore Waterfront Activities Center (KWAC) for its progress in bringing paddle sports to Kenmore.

Kenmore~Cascade Head Coach Dan Henderson described today’s results as, “a really good start for our new team.  We look forward to new members joining us in the spring to build on this success.”

Mayor David Baker, who welcomed the athletes at the beginning of the race and then presented the awards, described the goal of Kenmore to become a great paddling center and help develop Olympic Champions.  “When you think of canoe/kayak racing, we want you to think of Kenmore.  We want Kenmore youth to become Olympic Canoe/Kayak Champions.  “Waterfront access continues to be a top priority for the City of Kenmore, and this event is yet another marker on the path toward making Kenmore known across the region for its waterfront assets.”

Bellingham Race Results

Members of the Kenmore~Cascade Canoe and Kayak Team a great race in Bellingham, with all of our team members showing lots of improvement.

In K1 W PeeWee 2 km, first year kayaker Renee Ruan placed 6th with a time of 17:40.35.    In the 6km she finished 1st with a time of 53:52.69.  Renee will remain in the PeeWee age group again next year.

In C1 W Bantam 2 km, first year canoeist Andreea Ghizila placed 1st with a time of 24:45.99.  In the 6km she also finished 1st in a time of 1:07:16.96.   Andreea moves up to the Juvenile age group next year.

Thomas Hughes, racing in Juvenile K1 M 4km finished 2nd with a time of 26:44.37. He also finished 2nd in the 6 km  with a time of 38:55.56.  Thomas moves up to the Junior age group next year.

Also finishing second, but in the K1W 4km, was Nora Davis in a time of 27:04.84. in the 6km she also finished 2nd with a time of 45:15.88.  Nora also moves up to the Junior age group next year.

Masters Novice Kayaker, Chris Gutierrez Flynn, finished first in a time of 30:44.99.

In K1 M 4 km, veteran Masters Kayaker Karol Osusky  placed 3rd in a time of 25:49.00, and 5th in the 6 km with a time of 38:13.04.  Karol moves up to the “Masters I” age group next year

Kenmore~Cascade Canoe/Kayak Distance Race

The first Kenmore~Cascade distance race will be held on Saturday, October 25.  There will be two distances – a 5k and 10k course on the Sammamish Slough.  The 5k race will be a single loop of the course, 10k a double loop.  Starts will be a mass start at Squire’s Landing park, heading first upstream, around a turn buoy, and finishing at Squire’s Landing Park.

Parking

Parking in Squire’s Landing Park will be reserved for boat trailers.  There is a load/unload spot for individuals, but cars will need to be parked on NE 175th street or another remote location. NO parking in the apartment complex please!

Schedule

  • 8am: entries open
  • 9:30am: pre-race meeting
  • 10am: 5k race start
  • 11am: 10k race start
  • 12:30pm: awards

Entries

Entries may be submitted up to and on the day of race, until approximately 2 1/2 hours before the start of the race.  Entry fees are $10 per person and due before the start of the race.

Congratulations to Kenmore~Cascade Canoe/Kayak Team member Karol Osusky for placing 7th in K-1 Men Masters 65 – 69 years old age group at the ICF Canoe Marathon Masters World Cup!  Karol was the top US finisher in a time of 1:58:58.450.

Bellingham Race, Saturday October 18

Next race is the Bellingham Distance Race on Lake Padden in Bellingham.  Events include sngles and team boat at 2km and 6km.

Schedule:

  • Friday October 17 during practice: short practice and then load boats
  • Satruday October 18 6:30 am: meet at Squire’s Landing and drive to Bellingham
  • 8:30 am: arrive at Lake Padden, and unload and set up boats
  • 9:30 am: Pre-race meeting
  • 10:30 – 2:30: racing
  • 2:30: load boats and head home
  • 5:30: arrive at Squire’s Landing, unload

ICF – (International Canoe Federation) age groups

  • Atom: 9 and under, Peewee: 11 and under
  • Bantam: 13 and under
  • Juvenile: 15 and under
